The University of Economics and Finance (UEF) represents an assertion that an international-standard, world-class university could exist within Vietnam, serving the needs of local educational and economic markets, as well as reaching out on both regional and international scales. Campus planners took into consideration the Preliminary Program, as well as numerous physical site opportunities and regulatory constraints. After a brief site analysis phase, campus framework options were explored vis-à-vis international campus precedents and the overall objectives of UEF. This Conceptual Masterplan documents the specific physical campus planning ideas regarding site considerations, road and open space frameworks, the distribution of departments and other campus functions, as well as initial architectural and landscape concepts. Set to initiate its first classes in 2006, the University of Economics and Finance, Ho Chi Minh City, will become the first international-standard university in Vietnam and one of its few privately held educational institutions. A major university of 35,000 students, developed on a greenfield site in a nascent, brand-new district in Vietnam’s most commercially vibrant city, UEF serves as a wonderful opportunity to become a model for interdisciplinary campus planning and sustainable design in an emerging country. The campus plan responds to this bold charge by creating a landmark physical campus, reflective of world-class, archetypal universities, yet simultaneously sensitive to the nuances and needs of Vietnamese culture and its people.
