The St. Paul’s Parish regeneration project, is a sensitive urban design initiative aimed at preserving and enhancing one of Macau’s most iconic historical districts. Centered around the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Ruins of St. Paul’s, the Masterplan focuses on creating a seamless transition between the city’s rich colonial past and its vibrant contemporary life. HOK’s approach emphasizes the “Heritage Corridor” concept, which improves pedestrian connectivity from the historic center to the surrounding residential and commercial neighborhoods through carefully curated streetscapes and public plazas. The design integrates adaptive reuse of heritage buildings with modern infrastructure, ensuring that the district remains a living, breathing part of the city rather than a static monument. By implementing thoughtful lighting, signage, and open-space strategies, the project elevates the visitor experience while protecting the cultural integrity and sacred atmosphere of the Parish, reinforcing Macau’s identity as a unique crossroads of Eastern and Western civilizations.
