The University of California (UC) is planning to establish a research and education Centre within Silicon Valley in Moffett Field. The UC Silicon Valley Centre will be part of the UC Santa Cruz Campus and become the heart of the NASA Research Park (NRP) development in Moffett Field. SOM has been working with the UC Santa Cruz to position the University of California in the NRP development and to study planning and urban design options to develop a synergy between the university campus and the adjacent Biotech Laboratory, Aerospace Museum, and high-tech office buildings. UC Silicon Valley Centre comprises 25 of the 40-acre university area within the 170-acre NRP development. SOM, working with engineering consultants, performed the due diligence site research to determine the financial feasibility of building a new campus on a “Superfund” site based on an SOM master plan. Studies include confirming an initial estimate provided by NASA the land owner, determining a budget for infrastructure within the 40-acre university reserve, determine demolition and remediation site costs, and determine additional building construction costs due to Superfund status.
